The "AC Survival" Cheat Sheet

  • January 30, 2026

Is your AC actually broken, or just suffocating? Check these 3 things before calling a tech.

Gulf Coast summers aren’t forgiving. Extreme heat and heavy humidity can make your home feel like a sauna—and a malfunctioning AC only makes it worse. But before you panic and schedule a service call, take 5 minutes to see if your system just needs a little TLC.

This quick guide empowers you to troubleshoot your AC yourself, avoid unnecessary service fees, and stay cool when it matters most.

1. Check the Air Filter

A clogged or dirty filter restricts airflow and makes your AC work harder.

  • Remove the filter and inspect it.
  • Replace it if it looks gray or dusty.
Tip: A clean filter not only improves cooling but saves energy too.

2. Clear Debris from the Outdoor Unit

Leaves, grass clippings, and other debris can choke your AC condenser.

  • Make sure the area around the unit is clear for at least 2–3 feet.
  • Gently hose down the coils if dusty (with the unit off).
Tip: Keep plants and shrubs trimmed to improve airflow.

3. Check Thermostat Batteries & Settings

Sometimes the problem isn’t the AC at all—it’s the signal.

  • Replace old batteries in your thermostat.
  • Confirm it’s set to “Cool” and the temperature is below the room temp.
  • If you have a programmable thermostat, double-check your schedule.

Why This Matters

These three quick checks solve most minor AC issues and keep your system running efficiently. You’ll save money, stay comfortable, and avoid unnecessary stress during peak summer heat.

Pro Tip: If your AC still isn’t cooling properly after these checks, it’s time to call a licensed technician. But in most cases, your system just needed a little breathing room.
